What is Countdown Solver?
Countdown Solver is a free, no-registration online tool that helps you solve both the letters game and the numbers game from the Channel 4 TV show Countdown. Whether you're watching the show live and want to check your answer, practising at home to improve your game, or simply curious about what words are possible from a given set of letters, this is the tool for you.
We built Countdown Solver because we love the show and wanted a reliable, fast, UK English-first solver that truly mirrors the rules of the real game — not a generic anagram finder or a calculator that ignores the Countdown-specific constraints.
The site is entirely free to use. There are no accounts, no premium tiers, and no paywalls. Results are shown directly on the page so you never have to navigate away.
How the Letters Solver Works
The Countdown letters solver takes your 9-letter selection and searches an extensive UK English word list to find every word that can be made from those letters — using each letter only as many times as it appears in your selection.
The Dictionary
Our word list is built from the Oxford English Dictionary and covers standard British English vocabulary. This is the same reference used by Countdown itself. Specifically, we include:
- All standard dictionary words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
- Plural forms (e.g. cats, children)
- Verb conjugations: past tense (-ed), present participle (-ing), third-person singular (-s)
- Comparative and superlative adjective forms (-er, -est)
We exclude everything Countdown excludes:
- Proper nouns (names of people, places, brands, etc.)
- Abbreviations and acronyms
- Hyphenated compounds
- Words requiring apostrophes
- American spellings (e.g. color, organize — British colour, organise are fine)
How Results are Displayed
Words are grouped by letter count, from longest to shortest. Your highest-scoring answer is always at the top. Within each group, words are sorted alphabetically so you can scan them quickly.
How the Numbers Solver Works
The Countdown numbers solver uses an exhaustive search algorithm to try every possible arithmetic combination of your 6 numbers. It applies addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in every possible order and grouping, testing all permutations to find routes to the target.
Constraints
The solver enforces the exact rules of the Countdown numbers game:
- All intermediate results must be positive whole numbers — no fractions or negative values at any step
- Division is only attempted when it produces an exact whole-number result
- Each number can be used at most as many times as it appears in your selection
- You do not need to use all 6 numbers
When the Target is Impossible
Some number combinations genuinely cannot reach the target exactly. When that happens, the solver finds the closest achievable result within ±10 of the target and shows the working out — exactly as you would still score on the real show.
Who is Countdown Solver For?
We built this tool for a broad audience of Countdown fans:
- TV viewers who want to check their answer immediately after the clock stops
- Puzzle enthusiasts who play Countdown at home or in board game form
- Students and language learners building their English vocabulary through the game
- Competitive players who want to practise specific letter sets and study the patterns they miss
- Teachers using Countdown as a classroom activity and wanting a quick reference
- Maths and logic fans who enjoy exploring the numbers game and studying efficient solution paths
The solver works equally well on desktop, tablet, and mobile — so you can use it from the sofa while watching the show, or anywhere else.
Accuracy and Limitations
We aim to keep the word list as close to the real Countdown dictionary as possible, but Countdown's adjudicators ultimately have discretion on borderline words, and our list may occasionally differ on very obscure entries. If a word in our results is challenged on the show, the show's ruling takes precedence.
Similarly, the numbers solver is exhaustive within the rules described above — it will find every mathematically valid solution. However, if you spot a discrepancy between our results and what the Countdown expert desk accepts, please let us know.
We review and update the word list periodically. If you believe a word is missing or has been incorrectly included, we welcome your feedback.
Privacy and Advertising
We do not collect personal data, require registration, or store your solver inputs. The letters and numbers you type are sent only to our server to perform the lookup and are not logged or retained.
